<image:title>Upcoming Events - Spring Class Series - Sunday April 5, 1pm - 3pm</image:title>
<image:caption>As I have heard, people who are flying at high altitude are instructed to put on their own oxygen mask first if the cabin pressure suddenly drops, assuring that they can breathe well enough to help someone else. In that same way, in this class series we will read and inquire into the book Neurodharma: New Science, Ancient Wisdom, and Seven Practices of the Highest Happiness by Rick Hanson. We will cultivate stability, presence of mind and courage to meet the challenges of our world. From a book review: “…The Buddha didn’t use an MRI to become enlightened. Still, 2,500 years after he walked the dusty roads of northern India, neuroscientists are discovering the mechanisms of the brain that underpin the Buddha’s penetrating analysis of the mind. With deep research, stories, guided meditations, examples, and applications, Dr. Hanson offers a fascinating, inspiring vision of who we can be—and an effective path for fulfilling this wonderful possibility.” Participants in the class will need access to a copy of the book. If you would like to support our local bookstore Northtown Books, you can order directly from their website here. While the shop itself was tragically destroyed in a fire on January 2, you are still able to order from Northtown’s website and have books delivered to your address. You can also find used copies at online retailers like Alibris, Thriftbooks, and others. If you have questions about locating a copy of the book or other questions related to the class, please contact us here. Class dates are Sundays March 8, March 29 and April 5, 1:00-3:00 pm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Upcoming Events - Precepts Study Series - This class series is open to all, and required for those in the process of sewing Buddha’s robe in preparation for Jukai.</image:title>
<image:caption>Classes will be held from 7:10am to 8:00am on March 3, March 31, April 28, June 2. This class will meet in person in the zendo. The Ten Essential precepts can serve as a guide for upright living. In this class series we will study the precepts and their manifestation in the activities of everyday life. The conceptual framework will relate the precepts to the Four Noble Truths and the discussion will center on both the meanings of the words and the subtle interpretations each student may bring. We will read excerpts of writings by Reb Anderson and Dainin Katagiri as well as other primary source documents. This class is open to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of what it takes to live consistently with the Bodhisattva vow. It is also recommended, though not required, that you attend Full Moon Precepts Renewal ceremony April 1 or May 1 in place of evening zazen. Contact Gene if you intend to attend this series.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sangha News - Sangha Week at Green Gulch 2026 - October 21-25. Space is limited. Contact Beverly with questions or to reserve your spot.</image:title>
<image:caption>Arcata Zen Group is being welcomed as a Sangha affiliated with the Branching Streams of Suzuki Roshi to spend these special days at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center. For four nights, October 21-25, we will follow the daily schedule, participating in sangha life alongside Green Gulch students. Participants attend morning and evening meditation, eat meals with the students, and work 3½ hours daily; afternoons and evenings include free time and Dharma study. From the GGF website: “Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, also known as Green Dragon Temple (Soryu-ji), is a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition offering training in Zen meditation and ordinary work. It is one of three centers that make up San Francisco Zen Center, which was founded by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. Our effort at Green Gulch is to awaken in ourselves and the many people who come here the bodhisattva spirit, the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness. This is how we offer our understanding of Buddha’s Way. Green Gulch Farm is located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, in a valley that opens out onto the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the temple program of zen and study, it includes an organic farm and garden, as well as a guest house and conference center.” This is a unique opportunity for the AZG Sangha to physically experience our connection with the broader Soto Zen community in California and it is a chance for the residents and leaders at GGF to witness the stable and steadfast practice of our small and remote sangha. Cost is $140 per person per night ($115 per person per night for those sharing a room). Scholarship funds may be available. Space is limited. <image:title>Sangha News - Informal Time with Dharma Friends - A Note from Gene & the Practice Committee</image:title>
<image:caption>Dear Sangha, There has been a lot of enthusiasm lately for more informal time together – in part inspired by Milli’s generous offers for making bead jewelry and malas. Practice Committee is considering a change and we would like your input. We have done ‘game nights’ over the past year and more are scheduled for 2026. We are considering having some of that scheduled time become crafting sessions instead of games. We are also considering the possibility of offering crafting sessions at another agreeable time that might not interfere with job or family time. What is a crafting session you might ask – this is a time when people can bring anything they are making or learning how to make – for example crochet, sewing, collage, beading, macrame – completely open-ended as long as they are bringing their own supplies. Generally, people enjoy their craft and conversation, pretty light-hearted and fun. For game nights we are looking for someone who can choose an easy-to-learn game, teach it, and coordinate the evening. Does any of this sound fun to you? Please speak with/ email me directly, or anyone on Practice Committee: Beverly, Easton, Paula, Anita. warm bows, Gene</image:caption>

<image:title>Sangha News - New Zoom Book Group - Karen Armstrong’s “Buddha”</image:title>
<image:caption>A new book group is beginning on Thursday morning, March 19 at 10:00 a.m. Subsequently we will meet on the third Thursday of each month. We are reading Karen Armstrong’s book entitled, “Buddha”. It is a well-researched book by a respected religious scholar. She chronicles the life and the teachings of the historical Buddha. The paperback edition of this book can be purchased here from the website of Northtown Books for $18. There may be used copies available from other sources as well. This is an open group that meets only on zoom (not in person). Anyone who reads this is welcome to attend any session. We ask that you read the assignment within a day or two of the meeting so that you come with fresh questions and comments in mind. To join a session, click on the “Join Us On Zoom” button on the home page of this website. If you have any questions, contact Milli Quam. For the first class on March 19, please read the introduction and Chapter One, titled “Buddha”.</image:caption>
