The Arcata Zen Group is a Soto Zen Buddhist Sangha practicing on the North Coast of California.
We welcome anyone who wants to learn about and practice the Buddha's teachings.
We offer a daily and weekly Sangha sitting schedule as well as retreats,
celebrations and sesshins in Arcata & Eureka.

The Beginner's Handbook has AZG practices & sutras.

Weekly Sitting Schedule


Sunday Mornings
The Arcata Zen Group meets at the Trillium Dance Studios at 855 8th St, Arcata, CA 95521, next to the Arcata Post Office, a half a block from the northwest corner of the plaza. It is recommended to arrive at sits a few minutes early so as to be seated before the bells are rung for zazen.

Weekday mornings sittings are held at Rin Shin ji at 740 Park Ave., Arcata Monday through Friday

6:00am Zazen
6:50am Service

Weekday evenings sittings will be held at Rin Shin ji at 740 Park Ave., Arcata Monday through Thursday

5:30 to 6:10pm


There is zazen every Wednesday from 6 to 7PM, beginners please arrive by 5:55 pm at the First Methodist Church, 520 Del Norte Street, Eureka, California.  Enter single story building between F & G on Sonoma St. Room 10.

Beginners and experienced students are welcome.  If you are new to zen practice, please call 826-1701 or email link to info@arcatazengroup.org to arrange a convenient time for a brief orientation and instruction in zen meditation.

Eugene (Gene) Bush - Ryu Shin Fu Gan is the Arcata Zen Group'spart time residential Dharma Teacher. Eugene began formal practice in 1982 and received Dharma transmission from Katherine Thanas in 2010. Gene currently serves as the Administrator of Santa Cruz Zen Center. He also teaches the traditional practice of sewing Buddha’s Robe (rakusu and okesa). His paid work is as a teacher in a public alternative high school in Santa Cruz, California. He is interested in the ways in which formal practice trains us for everyday life.

Maylie Scott Roshi, the founding abbess of Rin Shin ji, Forest Heart Temple, passed away in 2001. Maylie had been on the Board of Directors of the BPF, involved in anti-nuclear issues, a founder of and mentor for BASE (Buddhist Alliance for Social Engagement), and was active both in Berkeley and Arcata in prisoner advocacy work.
